Thomas Gibson has been to selected to serve as the tenth chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He will assume his new role this summer.
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee enrolls over 18,000 undergraduate and 4,400 graduate students, according to the most recent federal data. Black students represent 8 percent of the undergraduate student body.
Since January 2021, Dr. Gibson has served as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. During his tenure, the university has experienced growth in student enrollment, academic programming, and philanthropic donations. Prior to his current role, he was vice president for student affairs and vice provost at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. While there, he led efforts to increase student retention and helped raise $8 million with the university’s advancement team.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Gibson served as associate vice president of student affairs at Ball State University in Indiana and associate dean for student development at York College of the City University of New York. He has also led academic support services at CUNY’s Queens College and the University of Connecticut at Stamford.

Dr. Gibson received his bachelor’s degree in communication from Eastern Connecticut State University, a master’s degree in education from the University of New Haven in Connecticut, and doctorate in educational leadership in higher education from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island.
