Meharry Medical College seeks a mission-oriented, inspiring, innovative, academic physician leader to serve as the new Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Meharry Medical College is the nation’s largest private, historically black academic health sciences center and has trained thousands of health care professionals. The Department of OB/GYN is committed to eliminating disparities in the understanding of and care for women from all backgrounds and providing quality, cutting edge maternity care for all. The department collaborates with other specialties within the College, the greater academic health sciences community in Tennessee, and globally through our long-standing research in southern Africa. Meharry is nationally recognized for its commitment to developing a broad and diverse healthcare workforce, cutting edge research in cardiometabolic diseases, genomics and infectious disease, solving health and clinical dilemmas through data analytics and health policy analysis, and delivering care to everyone especially the medical underserved. This legacy has resulted in noteworthy philanthropic gifts during the past two years that have allowed the College to launch exciting new programs and grow its educational and scientific footprint.
Reporting to Sonja Harris-Haywood, MD, MS, MA, Dean of the Meharry School of Medicine, the Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology will lead a department that strives to serve as a national model for comprehensive, integrated, multi-disciplinary approaches to women’s healthcare, especially for women of color. Departmental sub-specialties include maternal fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology, urogynecology and family planning. This Chair will be responsible for defining and promoting the overall vision for the department; will provide clinical, academic, research & innovation, and administrative leadership to faculty, staff, students, and residents; and will oversee and drive clinician recruitment, education, quality and process improvement initiatives. The Chair will also work collaboratively with Meharry’s Office for Research and Innovation, Meharry Medical Group and School of Medicine leaders, as well as hospital partners in strategy development and execution.
It is an exciting time to join Meharry as it launches its Sesquicentennial strategic plan, “Evolution and Transformation 2026,” and the Chair of OBGYN will be a critical part of the institution’s trailblazing effort to deliver exceptional care and educate future physicians who aspire to improve the lives of disadvantaged populations.
