U.S. Department of Education Redirects $435 Million in Federal Funding to HBCUs
Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Education cut $350 million in discretionary funding initially allocated for programs supporting Minority-Serving Institutions. Instead, these funds would be redirected to other “programs that do not include discriminatory racial and ethnic quotas that advance administration priorities.”
Now, the Trump Administration has announced these funds will be included as part of a $500 million, one-time investment in historically Black colleges and universities and tribal colleges. HBCUs are slated to receive nearly $435 million. When added to the existing appropriation approved by the U.S. Congress, HBCUs are expected to receive $1.38 billion in fiscal year 2025. This is a 48 percent increase over the previous amount.
“When President Trump released his executive order for HBCUs during his first 100 days of this term, many said that it did not produce funding,” said Lodriguez V. Murray, senior vice president for public policy and government affairs at the United Negro College Fund. “That is no longer the case. His order called for strengthening HBCUs by adding fiscal stability. These funds will begin that process. However, no one should be confused: HBCUs are currently and have been underfunded since their inception. While we are grateful for these funds, we are still under-resourced. With the right investment and partners, our past, and present, does not have to be our future. We hope the private sector will see this as a prime opportunity to invest in our going enterprise.”
Hmmm… this should make you PO’d that GA’s Senators Ossoff and Warnock vote for however Schumer tells them to rather than whats good for GA and America!
Liz Warren says 50 billion is needed for HBCUs. She is correct.
