Texas Southern University Announces New Strategic Plan

Texas Southern University recently launched Ascend 2030, a new strategic plan that outlines key focus areas for the HBCU and aims to support the university for long-term success.

Approved by the university’s board of regents, Ascend 2030 outlines specific priorities for the HBCU’s future. First, the plan emphasizes advancing student achievement and outcomes, including improving persistence and progression, aligning academic programs to workforce demand, and expanding access to high-value credentials. The HBCU also plans to focus on enhancing academic innovation and operational excellence through strengthening research partnerships and institutional effectiveness. Additionally, Ascend 2030 highlights the importance of technology and artificial intelligence. By integrating emerging digital tools across the university, Texas Southern aims to streamline operations and prepare graduates for high-demand careers.

“Ascend 2030 sets a clear direction for Texas Southern, grounded in outcomes and accountability,” said President J.W. Crawford III. “Our focus is on results — ensuring more students are moving forward, reaching key milestones, and staying on track to graduate prepared for what comes next. We are strengthening how the institution operates, improving performance across critical areas, and expanding our impact in ways that are aligned with the opportunities ahead.”
