Beginning in the Fall 2026 semester, Virginia State University will launch a new graduate certificate in special education leadership.
Approved by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, the program aims to equip educators with the specialized leadership skills needed to strengthen special education programs, support inclusive schools, and improve outcomes for students with disabilities. Participating students will learn how to manage special education programs in PreK-12 school settings through evidence-based leadership practices, specially designed instruction, inclusive service delivery models, and strategies for collaborating with families, educators, and community stakeholders.
“As schools work to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities, strong leadership is more important than ever,” said Willis Walter, vice president for external relations and dean of the College of Education. “Through this program, Virginia State University is preparing the next generation of special education leaders who will strengthen schools, support educators, and improve educational outcomes for students and their families.”
To enroll in the 12-credit-hour certificate program, students must hold a graduate degree in education, special education, or a related discipline. The program will be available in both traditional face-to-face and fully online delivery formats.
