Two African American Scholars Named to Endowed Chairs

barbara-guthrie-thumbBarbara Guthrie was appointed the Independence Foundation Professor of Nursing at Yale University. She also serves as associate dean for academic affairs at the Yale School of Nursing. Before coming to Yale, she taught at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Guthrie is a graduate of Boston University. She holds a master’s degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and a doctorate in nursing from New York University.

Milner-8 (reduced size)[3]H. Richard Milner IV was selected as the next holder of the Dr. Helen S. Faison Chair in Urban Education at the University of Pittsburgh. He is currently an associate professor of education at the Peabody College of Education at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. He will begin his new assignment in August. At Pitt, Dr. Milner also will be the director of the Center for Urban Education. He is the author of Start Where You Are But Don’t Stay There: Understanding Diversity, Opportunity Gaps, and Teaching in Today’s Classrooms (Harvard Education Press, 2010).

Dr. Milner holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from South Carolina State University in Orangeburg. He holds a second master’s degree and a doctorate in educational policy and leadership from Ohio State University.
