Emory Opens Exhibit of Its SCLC Archives

emory-logoEmory University in Atlanta originally acquired the archives of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 2007. The collection included more than 1,000 boxes of documents and other materials. The university first opened the archive to researchers last May. Now the university’s Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library has debuted its first exhibition from the archive. The exhibit, entitled “The Struggle Continues: The Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s Fight for Social Change,” includes about 200 documents, photographs, audio clips, and memorabilia.

andersonCurator Carol Anderson, an associate professor of African American studies and history at Emory University and curator of the exhibit, stated that the exhibition touches on almost every facet of the struggle for equality — poverty, unemployment, gun violence, voting rights, and efforts in other parts of the world.

Dr. Anderson is the author of Eyes off the Prize: The United Nations and the African-American Struggle for Human Rights, 1944-1955 (Cambridge University Press, 2003). She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Miami University, where she earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science, international relations, and history.  She earned her Ph.D. in history from Ohio State University.
