Richard Iton, a professor of African American studies and political science at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, died late last month after a 11-year battle with leukemia. He was 51 years old.
Professor Iton joined the faculty at Northwestern in 2002. He previously taught at McGill University in Montreal and the University of Toronto.
Dr. Iton was the author of two award-winning books: In Search of the Black Fantastic: Politics and Popular Culture in the Post-Civil Rights Era (Oxford University Press, 2008) and Solidarity Blues: Race, Culture, and the American Left (University of North Carolina Press, 2000).
He held bachelor’s and master’s degrees from McGill University and a Ph.D. in political science from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
