Five African Americans Taking on New Administrative Roles in Higher Education

gravesJulie Graves was appointed director of development for the School of Public Health at the University of Memphis. Since 2010, she has been assistant director of the university’s Hooks Institute for Social Change.

Graves is a graduate of Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri, and holds a master of public affairs degree from Park University in Parkville, Missouri.

HarmonMartino Harmon was selected as the next associate vice president for student affairs at Iowa State University. He will take office this summer. Currently, he is executive director of student success and retention at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. Previously, he has held administrative posts at Rhodes State College in Lima, Ohio, Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the University of Toledo.

Harmon holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Toledo. He is on track to complete a doctorate there this year.

Brown-L-Lonnie T. Brown Jr. was appointed associate dean of academic affairs at the University of Georgia School of Law. He joined the faculty at the law school in 2002 and currently holds the A. Gus Cleveland Distinguished Chair of Legal Ethics and Professionalism.

Professor Brown is a graduate of Emory University, where he was student body president. He earned his law degree at Vanderbilt University, where he was editor-in-chief of the Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law.

Hendricks_LevelleLaVelle Hendricks, assistant professor of psychology, counseling, and special education at Texas A&M University Commerce, was appointed to serve on the editorial board of the Journal of Counseling and Addiction and the National Policy Board for the National FORUM of Multicultural Issues Journal.

Dr. Hendricks is a graduate of Northeast Louisiana University. He earned a master’s degree at the University of Louisiana at Monroe and a doctorate in counseling from Texas A&M University Commerce.

Deidre McRoy was promoted to compliance officer for the department of music at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. She was serving as a research associate in the Office of Retention.

McRoy holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Florida A&M University.

Rogers walked-on to the football team at what was then Memphis State University in 1968, making him the institution's first Black football player. After graduating in 1972, he spent the next four decades as a coach and administrator with Memphis-area schools.

In Memoriam: Clyde Aveilhe, 1937-2024

Dr. Aveilhe held various student affairs and governmental affairs positions with Howard University, California State University, and the City University of New York.
