Three African American Men in New Faculty Roles

bimper-smAlbert Bimper Jr. was appointed assistant professor of ethnic studies at Colorado State University. He will also serve as senior associate athletic director for diversity and inclusion at the university. He was an assistant professor in the department of special education, counseling and student affairs at Kansas State University.

As an undergraduate, Dr. Bimper played football for Colorado State University and later for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League. He holds a master’s degree in sports psychology from Purdue University and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of Texas.

shepherd_marshallJ. Marshall Shepherd was named the inaugural University of Georgia Athletic Association Professor in the Social Sciences. Dr. Shepherd joined the university’s faculty in 2006 after spending 12 years as a research meteorologist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. He is a professor of geography and director of the university’s atmospheric sciences program.

Professor Shepherd holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in meteorology, all from Florida State University. In 2012, he was elected president of the American Meteorological Society.

Martin JamesJames Martin was appointed chair of the department of civil engineering at Clemson University in South Carolina. Dr. Martin has been serving as a professor of civil and environmental engineering and director of the Disaster Risk Management Institute at Virginia Tech. His research is focused on building code provisions in relation to earthquake risks.

Professor Martin is a graduate of the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering from Virginia Tech.
