New Program Offers HBCU Students Paid Internships at Art Museums

aamdThe United Negro College Fund and the Association of Art Museum Directors have announced a new program aimed at increasing racial diversity in art museum administration. Under the pilot program, 13 college juniors from UNCF member institutions will be hired as paid interns for one semester. Students will be expected to work a minimum of 15 hours a week at participating art museums. The students will also receive career and job readiness coaching and professional development training.

“Fewer than 5 percent of our 220-member art museums have minorities in senior management positions,” notes Christine Anagnos, executive director of the Association of Art Museum Directors. “This partnership creates a pathway for successfully growing the percentage of minorities in the arts over time by introducing minority students to leaders in the museum field.”

Funding for the program is provided by members of the Association of Art Museum Directors, the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Henry Luce Foundation.
