North Carolina HBCUs Embark on a New International Field Study Program

SAGE-LogoThe North Carolina Study Abroad Global Engagement (SAGE) Partnership is a collaborative effort of the 11 historically Black colleges and universities in the state with the aim of preparing students to participate and compete in today’s global marketplace. Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina, is the lead institution in the partnership.

The NC Sage Partnership is working with IES Abroad and the IERC Educational Foundation to establish a series of international courses of study for students at member institutions. The first of these courses, “Public Health in Jamaica,” will be a four-week program taught at the University of the West Indies in Kingston this summer.

Earl M. Brown, the coordinator of the NC Sage Partnership is a veteran of the Peace Corps. He stated, “This initiative is about three key things: one, proving HBCUs can collaborate in an environment of scarce resources; two, they can be integrative and move quickly; three, they are relevant globally and student-outcomes focused.”
