Fort Hays State University in Kansas has announced five finalists for president of the university. The university enrolls about 11,500 undergraduates students and 1,800 graduate students. African Americans make up 3 percent of the undergraduate student body. All of the presidential candidates have visited the Fort Hays campus over the past several weeks for interviews and public presentations. One of the five finalists is an African American.
Tom Jackson Jr. is vice president for student affairs at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. Before coming to the University of Louisville in 2007, Dr. Jackson was vice president for student affairs at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Earlier in his career, he was dean of students at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas. Dr. Jackson is the former president of the American College Personnel Association.
Dr. Jackson is a graduate of Southwest State University in Marshall, Minnesota. He holds a master’s degree from Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania and a doctorate in education from the University of La Verne in California.
