Seven African Americans Taking on New Administrative Duties in Higher Education

abegundeMaria E. Hamilton Abegunde was named the inaugural director of the Graduate Mentorship Center at Indiana University in Bloomington. This spring Dr. Abegunde was the first person to earn a Ph.D. from the university’s African American and African Diaspora Studies program.

Dr. Abegunde will also serve as a visiting lecturer in the Black studies program at the university. She is a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and holds a master degree in women’s and gender studies from DePaul University in Chicago.

TDBoyceTravis D. Boyce was named faculty fellow for undergraduate research at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. Dr. Boyce joined the faculty at the university in 2009 and is now a tenured associate professor of Africana studies.

Dr. Boyce is a graduate of Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He earned a master’s degree in history and a Ph.D. in cultural studies from Ohio University.

anthonyscottAnthony Scott was promoted to director of Community Engagement and Inclusion at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg. He was senior director of operations in the university’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

Scott is a graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion and the Indiana University School of Law.

Nevada-Winrow-thumbNevada Winrow was named director of institutional research and reporting at the Carey School of Business of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She was dean of special projects in the division of academic affairs at Baltimore City Community College.

Dr. Winrow is a graduate of The Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in neuropsychology from Howard University in Washington, D.C. She completed two post-doctoral fellowships at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

masonAngel Mason was appointed associate director of athletics at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. For the past two years, she was an assistant athletics director at the California Institute of Technology.

Mason is a graduate of Butler University in Indianapolis, where she majored in communication. She holds a master’s degree in sports management from California University of Pennsylvania.

wilkersonJoyce Wilkerson was appointed senior adviser to the president for community relations and development at Temple University in Philadelphia. She was the executive director of the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority and previously served as chief of staff for former Philadelphia Mayor John Street.

Wilkerson is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California, Berkeley School of Law.

YaKima S. Rhinehart was named senior director for alumni affairs at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina. She was the executive director of the South Carolina chapter of College Summit.

Rhinehart is a graduate of Fayetteville State University, where she majored in speech and theater communications. She is a master’s degree candidate in educational leadership from Concordia University.
