FBI Releases Data for U.S. Hate Crimes in 2010

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s latest data shows there were 6,628 reported hate crimes in the United States in 2010. The FBI states that while there are differences in the number of law enforcement agencies that report hate crime data from year to year, it appears that the rate of hate crimes has remained steady in recent years.

Of the reported 6,628 incidents in 2010, 47.3 percent were motivated by racial bias.

Of the hate crimes motivated by racial bias, the victims were African Americans in 69.8 percent of the cases. Whites were the victims in slightly more than 18 percent of race-based hate crimes.

Of the 6,008 known offenders, 58.6 percent were White and 18.4 percent were Black.
