The Most Diverse Student Bodies in American Higher Education

rutgers-newarkU.S News & World Report has published its annual rankings of the most diverse college and university campuses. The rankings are calculated by determining where students are most likely to encounter students of other racial or ethnic groups on campus.

The Newark campus of Rutgers University was rated as the most diverse in the country. According to the latest Department of Education data, Whites make up 25 percent of the undergraduate student body. Asian Americans make up 22 percent of the undergraduates and Hispanics are 23 percent. African Americans are 18 percent of the student body.

Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, Stanford University in California, St. John’s University in Queens, New York, and the University of Houston, tied for second place. Other universities rated as having the most diverse student bodies are the University of Hawaii, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, the University of San Francisco, Nova Southeastern University, Texas Woman’s University, UCLA, the University of Illinois-Chicago, and the University of Texas at Austin.
