Four Black Academic Men Win Prestigious Honors

Derek D. Bardell, a professor of business administration and a professor of teaching and learning at Delgado Community College in New Orleans, Louisiana, received the John and Suanne Roueche Excellence Award from the League for Innovation in the Community College.

Bardell is a graduate of Dillard University in New Orleans, where he majored in business management and urban studies/public policy. He holds a master’s degree in liberal arts and civic and cultural management from Tulane University in New Orleans.

achilefuSamuel Achilefu, a professor in the division of biology and biomedical sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, received the 2014 St. Louis Award for his invention of “cancer goggles.” After dye is injected into the surgical area that illuminates cancerous tissues to the wearer of the goggles designed by Dr. Achilefu, the surgeon is able to remove cancerous tissues with little or no damage to surrounding areas.

Dr. Achilefu is a native of Nigeria. He holds a Ph.D. from Université Henri Poincaré in Nancy, France.

Smith_ClaiborneDelaware State University has paid tribute to outgoing chair of its board of trustees Claiborne D. Smith by naming the university’s administration building in his honor. Smith served as board chair for the past 22 years.

He will remain on the board until his term expires in 2016. Smith served as acting president of the university for 16 months.

WilliamFranklinWilliam Franklin, interim vice president for enrollment management and student affairs at California State University, Dominguez Hills, has been selected to receive the 2015 Wang Family Excellence Award from the chancellor of the California State University System. The award comes with a $20,000 cash prize.

Dr. Franklin holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology from California State University, Northridge. He earned a doctorate in psychological studies in education from Stanford University.
