Paine College Suspends Its Football Program

PaineIn 2013, Paine College fielded its first football team in a half century. The club team finished with a 3-1 record. This past fall, the college played a full varsity schedule of 10 games and had a record of two wins and eight losses.

SamSullivanNow, the administration at Paine College has suspended football operations for two years as a cost-cutting measure. Samuel Sullivan, interim president of Paine College, stated that “at this critical juncture in the history of Paine College, we have no choice but to firmly reestablish the financial health of our College. It is only through achieving this condition that we will have a chance of being removed from probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and winning reaffirmation of the College’s accreditation.”

President Sullivan went on to say that if the college was able to reestablish its financial base and secure its accreditation, it would conduct a cost-benefit analysis to determine if the football program should be reinstated.
