Emanuel Collins, the John H. Seely Professor of Mechanical Engineering and chair of the department of mechanical engineering at Florida State University, received the Black Engineer of the Year Award in the College Level Promotion of Education category.
Dr. Collins joined the faculty at Florida State in 1994 and currently is the director of the Center for Intelligent Systems, Control and Robotics at the university. He is a graduate of Morehouse College and holds a Ph.D. in aeronautics and astronautics from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Souleymane Bachir Diagne received the Lenfest Distinguished Teaching Award, an endowed program established to honor faculty at Columbia University. As a winner of the award, Professor Diagne will receive $25,000 for each of the next three years.
Professor Diagne teaches French and philosophy. A native of Senegal, he joined the faculty at Columbia in 2008 after teaching at Northwestern University and Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar.
Bridal Pearson senior lecturer and director of the human services program at the University of Baltimore and John Hudgins, associate professor and chair of the department of social sciences at Coppin State University in Baltimore are sharing the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching from the University System of Maryland Regents. The two scholars are being honored for their collaborative teaching in the joint master of science in human service degree program offered by Coppin State and the University of Baltimore.
Dr. Pearson holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Baltimore and a Ph.D. from Morgan State University in Baltimore. Dr. Hudgins holds bachelor’s and Ph.D. degrees in sociology from Duke University. He also earned a master’s degree at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.
Jamila Stockman, assistant professor of medicine and global public health at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, has been chosen to receive the Linda E. Saltzman New Investigator Award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Futures Without Violence, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending violence against women and children.
Dr. Stockman joined the faculty at the University of California, San Diego in 2011. She is a graduate of Holy Names University in Oakland, California. Dr. Stockman holds a master of public health degree from George Washington University and a Ph.D. in infectious disease epidemiology from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
