Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis May Now Offer Graduate Degree Programs

GOLDSEAL_HSSUHarris-Stowe State University is a historically Black educational institution in St. Louis. It enrolls about 1,300 undergraduate students. Now for the first time in the institution’s 158-year history, Harris-Stowe has been granted the authority to offer graduate degree programs.

The university was only granted the authority to offer graduate degree programs. The university will now have to make proposals for specific programs to the state’s Coordinating Board of Higher Education.

In addition, the university has been authorized to offer four new bachelor’s degree programs in finance, political science, sociology and urban ecology. Two new online degree programs will also be offered this fall in health care management and criminal justice.

In signing the legislation authorizing Harris-Stowe State University to offer graduate programs, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon said that “allowing Harris-Stowe to offer graduate degrees and expand its undergraduate offerings will create greater opportunities for students in the St. Louis region for generations to come.”
