William Julius Wilson, the Lewis P. and Linda L. Geyser University Professor at Harvard University, has been selected to receive the 2017 SAGE-CASBS Award from SAGE Publishing and the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. The award, established in 2013, recognizes individuals for outstanding achievement in the behavioral and social sciences that advance our understanding of pressing social issues. Professor Wilson will be honored in June on the Stanford University campus.
Margaret Levi, director of the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University, stated that “few academics have had such a significant mark on both research and policy. We at CASBS are proud to count him as a former fellow and a current friend and ally in our efforts to analyze and combat inequality and inequity.”
Dr. Wilson is the author of numerous books including The Declining Significance of Race: Blacks and Changing American Institutions (University of Chicago Press, 1978) and More Than Just Race: Being Black and Poor in the Inner City (W.W. Norton, 2009). He has been awarded the National Medal of Science and is the holder of 46 honorary degrees.
Professor Wilson is a graduate of Wilberforce University and holds a master’s degree from Bowling Green State University, both in Ohio. Professor Wilson earned his Ph.D. at Washington State University.
