The New Provost at South Carolina State University

Learie B. Luke has been named provost and the chief academic officer at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg. Since 2008, Dr. Luke has held numerous senior administrative roles in the Division of Academic Affairs most recently as acting and interim provost. The tenured associate professor of history, formerly served as interim associate vice president for faculty and programs and interim associate vice president of academic affairs.

Dr. Luke is the author of Identity and Secession in the Caribbean: Tobago Versus Trinidad, 1889 to 1980 (University of the West Indies Press, 2007).

Dr. Luke holds a bachelor’s degree in theology from Caribbean Union College in Trinidad and Tobago and a bachelor’s degree in history from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan. He holds a master’s degree in history from Morgan State University in Baltimore and a Ph.D. in history from Howard University in Washington, D.C.
