HBCUs Throughout the Southeast Impacted by Hurricane Irma

Many of the nation’s historically Black colleges and universities are located in the southeastern United States. As a result many were impacted by powerful Hurricane Irma.

HBCUs in several states called off classes, athletic events, and other activities. Florida A&M University in Tallahassee is closed through Friday September 15. Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens remains closed. Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida reports they are “without power, electrical lines down on campus and have damage to some buildings.”

The impact of the hurricane also closed HBCU campuses in Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

All of us at JBHE offer our prayers for those impacted by the storm.
