Job Description:
The Laboratory Physicist is primarily responsible for providing high quality state-of-the-art instructional resources and support. The incumbent supervises the 3-member instructional team responsible for managing and providing direct support to the introductory labs, astronomy labs and lecture demonstrations. This position provides direct support for the intermediate and advanced labs and provides continuity and organizational structure to the labs as assigned faculty change.
This position works with faculty to direct the growth and development of the instructional labs. The incumbent is responsible for developing new lab exercises, lecture demonstrations and online resources while maintaining all instructional instruments, equipment, and tools in functional conditions. Collaborates with faculty to develop, revise, and upgrade experiment and lab manuals to meet students’ demands and suggestions.
This is a staff position and is therefore not a tenure-track position.
Job Competencies
- Master’s degree in physics, or equivalent combination of education and experience, with a broad knowledge of all fields of physics
- 3 years’ experience creating and developing quality instructional laboratory exercises suitable for the graduate and undergraduate levels
- 3 years’ experience providing lecture demonstrations, including creating and upgrading demonstrations
- 3 years’ experience supervising technical personnel
- Strong technical & laboratory skills w/ a solid knowledge of physics & laboratory instrumentation
- High mechanical aptitude with a good sense for efficient design
- Proficient with technical electronics including familiarity with basic household wiring
- Proficient with a broad variety of hand and machine tools.
- Proficient with Windows and Apple computers including typical software, hardware and peripherals.
- Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor that includes the ability to interact effectively with faculty, graduate & undergraduate students, and staff; must also be able to diplomatically set limits and boundaries.
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Strong verbal communication skills that include the ability to give quality training presentations and demonstration shows
- Strong written communication skills including effective technical writing
- Strong managerial skills and the ability to demonstrate good judgement in unexpected situations.
- Possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.
