Carleton College, one of the nation’s top liberal arts institutions, seeks a collaborative and inspiring Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs who is an outstanding academic leader and scholar. Carleton is uniquely positioned to play a leadership role in advocating for the power of a liberal arts education. The next Provost will be called on to champion excellence in the liberal arts and elevate Carleton’s core values of curiosity, community, and impact with enthusiasm and demonstrated skill in effectively fostering strategic change.
Carleton is a private college of about 2,000 students located in Northfield, Minnesota, just 45 minutes south of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Consistently recognized by US News as the top college for undergraduate teaching, Carleton is known for its academic rigor, warm community, and delight in shared learning. Its faculty are excellent teachers and cutting-edge scholars. Its stunning 1,040-acre campus is accessible to students from a wide range of economic backgrounds due to generous financial aid policies. Graduates are intellectually curious and leave Carleton as critical thinkers and engaged leaders who make a difference in whatever paths they pursue, from graduate school to public service to business.
Carleton is at an important inflection point as it looks ahead to the next decade. The current strategic plan, Carleton 2033: The Liberal Arts in Action, calls on the college to strengthen its leadership role as a champion of the liberal arts, while also outlining an ambitious strategy to ensure students are well prepared for the world they will enter when they graduate. Reporting to the President, the Provost will guide implementation of the strategic plan, collaborate with staff to advance the operations of a well-functioning academic affairs division, work with faculty to support Carleton’s core liberal arts disciplines, foster exciting interdisciplinary initiatives, and advocate for the impact of a liberal arts education. They will support faculty and staff under their supervision in professional development and work with them to develop a shared vision for the future of the academic program, one in which all students thrive at Carleton and beyond. The ideal candidate will have a deep commitment to shared governance with faculty and staff and excel in forming productive work relationships across the college.
The starting base salary will be commensurate with qualifications, experience, market, and organizational considerations, with an anticipated range of $300,000 – $350,000.
Screening of complete applications will begin immediately and continue until the completion of the search process.
