Department Chair – Multidisciplinary Engineering Studies

Morgan State University (MSU) invites applications and nominations for the position of Department Chair for the new Multidisciplinary Engineering Studies Department in the Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. School of Engineering (SOE). As the pre-eminent, public urban research university and a National Treasure located in the state of Maryland, MSU plays a vital role providing educational opportunities for its residents, for students nation-wide and for the international community. Reporting to Dean Oscar Barton, Jr. and working collaboratively with SOE’s leadership, the department chair will define a vision that will chart new areas of opportunity for the department and will provide the leadership and an entrepreneurship spirit necessary to achieve them. The department chair will manage all operations of the department including those related to its offered programs, for its faculty, for its staff and those related to budget and finance. Currently, the department already has one Program Director for Mechatronics Engineering with plan to expand to offer two additional engineering programs. This 12-month, tenured appointment is at the rank of full professor with an anticipated start in Fall 2023.

The department chair is the academic and administrative officer for the new Multidisciplinary Engineering Studies Department with responsibilities that include but are not limited to the following:

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Providing the strategic vision, the intellectual and academic leadership toward advancing educational and administrative agendas for a broad range of innovative, transformational initiatives for the department. These initiatives are effectively implemented through cross-disciplinary collaboration, strengthening corporate and industry partnerships, and developing global and local networks of support;
  • Overseeing the management and promotion of excellence within the instructional, service, and research mission of the department;
  • Providing miscellaneous services as the department’s chief administrator while working with school of engineering administration, the university administration, the University Council;
  • Directing hiring, promotion, and retention of faculty and staff at the department level; and
  • Guiding the development and oversight of undergraduate and graduate curricula and degree programs, including compliance with accreditation standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
