Grace E. Harris Retires After a Career That Spanned 48 Years at Virginia Commonwealth University
Grace E. Harris has retired as a distinguished professor of public policy at the leadership institute that bears her name at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Her service included terms as dean of the School of Social Work, provost, and acting president.

In Memoriam: Robert Martin Screen
Robert Martin Screen was head tennis coach at Hampton University for 41 years. He is the only African American coach to win a national collegiate tennis championship. He also was chair of the department of communication sciences and disorders for more than 50 years.

Fayneese Miller currently serves as dean of the College of Education and Social Services and professor of leadership and developmental sciences at the University of Vermont. Previously, she taught for 20 years at Brown University.

In Memoriam: Felicia Janette Jones-Haskins, 1962-2015
Felicia Jones-Haskins was an assistant professor and chair of the Allied Health Program at Wilmington University in Delaware. She recently defended her doctoral dissertation at Widener University.
In Memoriam: Reuben V. Burrell, 1919-2015
Burrell started taking photographs at the 1949 commencement ceremonies at Hampton University. At the time of his death he was 95 years old and went to work up to the day before he died.

At half the HBCUs in our survey, the Black student graduation rate is 34 percent or lower. There are seven HBCUs in our survey where less than one in five entering Black students earn a bachelor’s degree within six years.
