Indiana University Lecturer’s Contract Ends Following Lesson Linking “MAGA” to White Supremacy
Indiana University has decided to not renew the contract of Jessica Adams, a lecturer with the School of Social Work who was subject to an investigation for displaying a graphic on White supremacy in her class, according to a report from Indiana Public Media.
While teaching a course during the fall 2025 semester, Adams showed her class an image with examples of overt (socially unacceptable) and covert (socially acceptable) White supremacy. One of the covert examples was President Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.” In response, a student filed an anonymous complaint against Adams, claiming she violated Indiana’s intellectual diversity law, which penalizes faculty for not presenting diverse viewpoints in their curricula.
Following the complaint, Adams was removed from her class. When she returned, she was subject to observation from university monitors. Toward the end of the Spring 2026 semester, Adams was placed on an improvement plan, which cited offenses unrelated to intellectual diversity, such as time management and course organization. In May, Adams received notice from Indiana University Indianapolis Chancellor Latha Ramchand that her employment with the university would conclude on June 30, the end of her current contract.
