Job Description:

This position provides high-level, comprehensive grant and finance management for the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences (DEEPS). Responsibilities include: high-level financial planning and analysis; pre- and post-award research administration; purchasing approvals; management of the department and auxiliary accounts; processing of salary allocations and costings; and effort certification coordination. This position also manages and supervises three employees (a grants coordinator, financial coordinator, and admin coordinator) and serves as HR coordinator in Workday, overseeing undergraduate student employment and approving hours for technical staff.

The Grants and Financial Manager partners with the Academic Department Manager (ADM) on all matters pertaining to grant administration and financial oversight of all University funds. This position serves as back-up for the ADM.

This position plays a pivotal role in the financial management of DEEPS and provides a critical leadership role in support of budget management and analysis, research administration (both pre and post award) and adherence to and compliance with all University policies. Oversight of externally funded research grants is essential.

The successful candidate will have the ability to effectively advise the chair and the ADM regarding the financial status of the department, the financial implications of new initiatives and proposals, and the deployment of departmental resources. The successful applicant will work with confidential information on a daily basis.

This position is hybrid eligible.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 5-7 years’ experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in grants administration and financial management, preferably in an academic setting.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Direct experience in financial management, including budget management, reporting, financial modeling, and financial analysis.
  • In-depth knowledge of sponsored project accounting, fund accounting, and financial reporting.
  • Proficient with grant sponsor websites: NSF Fastlane; Research.gov; and Nspires.
  • Knowledge of University systems and policies.
  • Highly proficient with financial reporting and spreadsheet applications.
  • Strong financial, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills with the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a deadline-driven environment and juggle competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
