Kenneth B. Chance, Sr., the first Black dean of the School of Dental Medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, has announced he will step down from his role on December 31.
Dr. Chance was appointed to his current position in 2014 after spending a decade as a member of the Case Western Reserve University board of trustees. Over the course of his tenure, the school has acquired state-of-the art technology for academic laboratories and clinical programs, increased fundraising efforts, and expanded community outreach efforts.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Chance served as dean of the dental school at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, one of the country’s four historically Black medical schools. He previously spent 14 years on the faculty at the University of Kentucky, where he also served as chief of endodontics.
Dr. Chance earned his bachelor’s degree from Fordham University in New York and his doctor of dental surgery degree from Case Western Reserve University.
